Putting our products to the test

Top performance

Sure, you need to know how a security solution works, but it’s even more important to know how well it works. When put through the rigors of real-world testing, Trend Micro's products regularly outperform the competition's.

AV Test Award Best Performance

Trend Micro is very proud to have received the 2018 Best Protection award given by AV-Test for our Internet Security solution. We are also proud to have received the 2018 Best Performance award given by AV-Test for OfficeScan (now Trend Micro Apex One?) corporate endpoint solution. We are committed to evaluating our security solutions in public tests like the ones AV-Test performs every year.

For our endpoint products, AV-TEST runs bi-monthly testing for Protection, Performance, and Usability. Trend Micro solutions consistently rank at the top level of the vendors participating in the tests. Below are the 2018 results.

Apex One (formerly known as OfficeScan)

Trend Micro Apex One has achieved certification in all 6 tests for 2018 and was a Top Product for 6 of the 6 tests. Over the past 4 years that Trend Micro participated in this test, it has achieved one of the highest overall scores against our key competitors as seen below.

Below are the scores received for the tests performed in 2018.

AV-Comparatives' Whole Product Dynamic Real-World Protection Test

Trend Micro also consistently ranks ahead of the pack against other security vendors in AV-Comparatives' Whole Product Dynamic Real-World Protection Test. The results below show the averages for Trend Micro Internet Security compared to select vendors, including Microsoft, which is used as a baseline for all 10 tests conducted in 2018.

These results are based on the test set of 2,078 live test cases of malicious URLs found in the field, consisting of working exploits (i.e. drive-by downloads) and URLs pointing directly to malware. Solutions were allowed to use all their protection features in detecting these wide-ranging sets of threats.

Proven email security

Trend Micro's messaging and mail server security has consistently ranked first in Opus One’s anti-spam tests, outperforming 9 leading security vendors (Figure 1).

Multiple layers of protection

Today’s ransomware and Business Email Compromise threats are typically delivered using spam and phishing emails to their intended victims. A proven email security solution can mitigate your risk of becoming infected or falling for socially engineered emails from cyber criminals.

Trend Micro email solutions utilize a multiple layer of proven security technologies including IP Reputation, Content Inspection, Newly-borne Host Inspection, and machine learning through our Socially Engineered Attack Protection. These advanced threat protection technologies ensure messaging threats—even those without attachments or embedded URLs—can be blocked before reaching your end users.

Opus One’s methodology relies on actual corporate mail streams, manually analyzed for threats. It provides significant real-world results, unlike results obtained through automated tests based on artificial mail streams.

Superior mobile protection

The smartphone has become a universal tool valued for its productivity and fun factor, but disliked for the security problems it can bring. Malicious apps, including ransomware targeting Google's Android platform are continually being developed by threat actors. In 2018, Trend Micro’s Mobile App Reputation Service (MARS) received 29 billion query requests from our customers devices and blocked 86 million malicious apps.

AV-TEST benchmarked mobile security solutions, and Trend Micro Mobile Security for Android excelled and achieved certification in the 6 certification tests conducted in 2018. AV-Test scores solutions in three categories, protection (6 points), usability (6 points), and feature set (1 point) for a maximum overall score available of 13. The Trend Micro solution scored among the highest of the key vendors participating in all 6 tests.

Below are the 2018 results from these tests.

In 2018, for the 4th consecutive year, Trend Micro Mobile Security detected 100% of the Android malware tested with 0 false positives, tied for best in the field.

NSS Labs Breach Detection Systems test results

NSS Labs 2018 breach detection competitive testing rigorously compared the security effectiveness and total cost of ownership (TCO) of products from 5 vendors.

These closed-door tests subjected the products to an array of sophisticated attacks using advanced malware, stress, and capacity loading across two protocols (SMTP and HTTP). TCO assessments included purchase price, maintenance, and operational costs. For the 5th year in a row, Trend Micro is a recommended vendor for both TCO and security effectiveness. TCO assessments included purchase price, maintenance, and operational costs.

This year something new happened. Two competitors were acknowledged on the Security Value Map but no measurements or dots could be placed on the map for them. NSS Labs had this statement next to their names, “NSS was unable to measure the effectiveness and determine the suitability of breach detection system products from these vendors, and therefore, cautions against their deployment without a comprehensive evaluation.”

“Recommended” 5 years in a row for Breach Detection System

NSS Labs tested Trend Micro? Deep Discovery? Inspector, a network appliance that uses multiple threat engines, and custom sandboxing, leveraging Apex One, Trend Micro’s advanced endpoint protection for Windows, Mac, and Virtual Desktops. Our products make use of the Trend Micro? Smart Protection Network? global threat intelligence to detect, analyze, and respond to advanced malware, command-and-control communications, and attacker behavior that is invisible to traditional security solutions.

Time to detect

Organizations are under constant attack, so detection is critical and quick detection and response is the only way to say ahead of the bad guys. You need a reliable, consistent solution that you can depend on day after day. NSS Labs has included time to detect as a key variable on their test for the past two years. Trend Micro has shown consistency by leading the way in time to detect.

Consistently recommended

When looking for network security tools, you need protection that you can rely on. You don’t want to overpay, but at the same time you want to make sure it will keep you protected. For the 5th year in a row Trend Micro was “Recommended” on the Breach Detection Systems test. With every vendor tested finishing above the average lines, Trend Micro is very proud of the results, which combine very strong scores in both security effectiveness and total cost of ownership.

“Recommended” Next-Gen Intrusion Prevention System (NGIPS)

In the 2018 NSS Labs NGIPS Group Test, security effectiveness, application and user controls, performance, stability, reliability, and total cost of ownership (TCO) were tested on next-generation IPS devices from 6 vendors.

NSS Labs tested the Trend Micro? TippingPoint? 8400TX, a purpose-built system that protects against known, unknown, and undisclosed vulnerabilities anywhere in the network without impacting network performance. With industry-leading security intelligence and exclusive access to vulnerability data from the Zero Day Initiative, TippingPoint solutions go beyond next-gen IPS to defend the network from the edge, to the data center, and to the cloud with real-time enforcement and automated remediation.

?

  • Recommended NGIPS for the 3rd year in a row
  • 97% of attacks blocked
  • Effective against all evasion techniques
  • Exceptional TCO at $7 per protected Mbps
